
Chartered in 1983, Aga Khan University (AKU) is a world-renowned progressive organization that is committed to excellence in education, research, and community service. Occupying a central place in the Aga Khan Development Network, AKU provides higher education in nursing, medicine, and education development and carries out research pertinent to the countries in which it serves and the developing world at internationally accepted academic standards.
In education, AKU’s Institute for Educational Development, Pakistan (AKU-IED) has been an agent of positive change for over 17 years, demonstrating effective ways to improve the education systems in developing countries, particularly in Pakistan. In collaboration with international universities and government agencies, it has pioneered innovative academic and professional development programs for teachers, teacher educators, and policy makers, and while demonstrating ways to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of schools and other educational institutions.
The opportunity now exists for a new Director to provide visionary and strategic leadership for the continued growth and development of AKU-IED. Building on the success that it has already achieved, the new Director will promote an environment of academic excellence in research, teaching and scholarship. The new Director will have the support of the Provost and the Board of Trustees to evaluate the focus of AKU-IED to include a broader concept of educational development and educational concepts. In fulfilling the duties of this role, he/she will continue to raise the Institute’s profile by acting as a catalyst to strengthen AKU-IED’s bonds with the community and partner universities and governments both local and abroad.
The new Director will have earned a doctorate and achieved a strong track record in scholarship. He/she will have demonstrated powerful and transparent leadership that can foster a shared vision. The Director will have increased academic excellence through creative management and have achieved scholarly, educational, financial and administrative goals similar to those of AKU, IED.
The Director will be based in Karachi, the financial centre of Pakistan and a large cosmopolitan city. There is a strong expatriate network, and activities centre on the many excellent restaurants, and golf and sailing, two very popular and easily-accessible pastimes. For those who have lived and worked in developing countries, life in Karachi holds many attractions. Karachi is located in the Southern coast of Pakistan and is well removed from the unrest often reported in the North.
